I'm in the computer lab right now at a Youth Builders facility (It's like a YMCA with computers). I also went to a Coffee People today, as well. Starbucks is nothing compared to this place! What else did we do today? We went to a battered women's shelter today. (By the way, if you don't know where I am, I'm on a SEEDS [Students for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service] trip). So, I volunteered at this battered women's shelter. I feel like I've made a difference. It's not the same as volunteering at the Discovery Science Center. This shelter really needed the help, and even if I was just making out the calendar for them, it means that the staff can do other things for the people. It's indirect. ... and it made a difference.

Where did everybody go? After today's registration, this place has been as empty as a graveyard! I guess they all went to the concert... hmm... I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it... not my kind of music. I guess there's contradancing tonight. I don't feel like going. Must read a book for this other girl's thesis project... must... make... self... read... it...

Okay, what I'm taking: Intro to Computing (JAVA and the like), Intro to Economics, Intro to Physics, Western Humanities: Greece and Rome, Orchestra, Ballroom Dancing, and a Nuclear Reactor certification class. How many units is that? 4.5, the maximum load. Orchestra, ballroom, and nuclear reactor classes are all 0-unit classes.

By the way, to get your transcripts from IBNY sent to your college, call the IBNY transcripts department at (212) 696-4464 and ask for Lauren. You'll need to know your ID number (for Loara, 1139-_ _ _. Know your three last digits).

As for today, I registered for classes. I have 4.5 units, orchestra, ballroom dancing, and nuclear reactor certification. This is going to be great! :) I don't know where everyone went around here... I just spent three hours or so doing registration stuff. My advisor is really cool.

Oh yeah, and I fixed my printer... again... but this time, it WORKS!

I leave for the SEEDS trip tomorrow. See you on Sunday!

I placed into second year for music theory and french! (Those were the only two placement tests I took). I should be going into Analysis for math. I plan on taking Econ and Physics (in addition to Hum 110). I'm going to become certified to run the nuclear reactor, I'm going to join the orchestra, and I'm going to take ballroom dancing. This'll be fun!

I bough a bunch of CD's for $1 each at this really cool used CD place... they're all essentially new (not damaged at all!). I didn't go salsa dancing tonight. I didn't want to be as disappointed as when I sat through the brutality of the scavenger hunt. I didn't want to be around the drunkenness and the like, either. Instead, I spent the night yelling at my printer, hoping that it would work. It still doesn't. Even Joe (perhaps the only guy in our dorm who is proficient in the Mac ways) couldn't get it working (well, he sorta did... I'll give him credit for the one test page). I hate Macs. Well, I guess I shouldn't say that on a Mac! haha.

I need to get my IB credits settled... need transcript from IBNY. Need to call them.

Ben, are you still reading this? Sign my guestbook, gosh darn it! :)

We had a talk about the Honor Code today. Makes sense, if you ask me. Just follow the golden rule and respect others. That's it.

So, yesterday, I met this amazing guy. I'll leave it at that.

I'm sick of all the alcohol and drugs! I was sitting on the floor for the scavenger hunt counting, and I put my hand down... right on a puddle of spilled beer. Yuck!

I met my advisor today, Joe Buhler. I also met his other pupil, a young man who skipped out on his last IB year to go to Reed. I guess I put IB pretty high on my priority list to have missed Calc for it... then you have a guy quit on it!

But, all in all, I love Reed. As I was walking on the bridge, I heard a train in the distance. I hear it now. It reminds me of the echo of Disneyland... the train whistle I can hear from my window. But sadly, no fireworks.

Last thing, I promise... the sky here is beautiful... no smog to block the stars... it's like the star spot, but it can be viewed from anywhere that is exposed to the sky.

Why is it that I am uncomfortable around people who drink and who do drugs (while they're drinking/doing drugs)? I was asked this question today... and I don't know the answer. Could I possibly be "prejudiced" toward drinkers/druggies? I don't know. I guess I'm going to have to get used to it here. Don't get me wrong, the people here are great. I met some really really nice people yesterday -- no drugs involved, I promise! :) By the way, for all you Anaheimers, my reed.edu account works now, so feel free to email me there... also, I would enjoy some nice snail mail! You have my Mail Stop number! :)

I am incredibly exhausted. Reed is great! I love it here. The people are nice and the area is nice. My dorm is awesome! Today, we packed up my suitcases into our lovely rental Chevy Malibu at about 7:30 am... then, we drove into Washington State (just for fun, yeah, it's nerdy, so what?!). Then, back over the Willamette and to Reed. I checked in, then set to unpacking. I love my room! My roommate is cool. All the people are cool here, pretty much. I can't say I like the excessive drinking and smoking going on (yah, it's EVERYWHERE), but hey, it's college... it's probably the same (if not worse) at Berkeley! Well, I think I should get some sleep... tomorrow is Convocation.
