The inauguration celebration today... let me just say that it was like The Great Gatsby... lights, food, music, people dressed up, lots of people all over the place, a brawl for the Doyle Owl (a concrete owl that used to be on top of a building, but is now just something that is fought over for the sake of being fought over), and fun. I enjoyed it very much. Pink Martini, a salsa band, played at the dance after the dinner. Jesse and I went to the dance... after we went to see the Doyle Owl. I got tackled into the fray, but Jesse saved me. I lost my halo glow necklace in the process, though.
I need to study for Economics, and I need to still read a hundred or so pages of Herodotus. In addition to that, I still have to write up a plan for my Physics lab on Tuesday. I also need to read 117 pages of The Oresteia by Aeschylus. Oh yeah, and I have yet another Humanities paper to write on the following topic:
At 7:152, Herodotus says, "My business is to record what people say, but I am by no means bound to believe it -- and that may be taken to apply to this book as a whole." Select an incident in The Histories and determine what constitutes proof for Herodotus. Possible incidents are the story of Helen (2:113-120), the madness of Cleomenes (6:75-84), and the "hand of God" at Salamis (8:90-94).
Gee, I'd better get started on this!

I forgot to write about last night... I got to run the Nuclear Reactor! How exciting is that?! So, my name is now on the inside cover of the Reactor log. Wait a second... Berkeley doesn't license Undergrad students for Nuclear Reactor Operation! Uh oh... Yay Reed!

I should be at Hayhurst, teaching science right now. Instead, I'm here... why? Because the van won't start. Grrr. Poor kids... no cell model lab! :(

Ooo, I forgot to write about my pizza revelation -- it's not that I don't like pizza... it's that I don't like pizza sauce! We went to Pizzicato (a local pizza place... gourmet pizza... think CPK). It was delicious! No pizza sauce, only cheese, lots of (olive oil?), cheese (including gorganzola... which is one crazy cheese!), garlic, sausage, spinach, and mushrooms. Wow. That was good pizza. It was also very expensive pizza. Good thing Gray Fund and Reed College paid for it! :)

So... much... reading... to... do... Not done yet... must read through breakfast and read through the void of time that would have been Humanities lecture... How much reading, you ask? 112 pages of Herodotus, 35 pages of Economics, and a chapter of Computing, not to mention reading for Physics that I should do before starting my homework. I've done half of the Herodotus, all the Econ, and all the Computing. I have Physics homework due tomorrow, as well as Econ homework. Yikes! This is a lot of reading/studying!!!

This week's Hum topic: Black Athena. If Greek civilization draws its roots from Egypt, why not study Egypt? (My answer: because we're taking a Humanities class entitled "Western Humanities: Greece and Rome." If Egypt were in the title, I'd bet you we'd be studying Egypt too!).
Also, now available: Beazzer: A Reedie Homepage. Go to http://www.reed.edu/~laub. The page is formatted exactly like my old page (minus a lot of things)... but be sure to visit the page with PICTURES from Reed.

It rained today. I love the rain. I am about a half an hour's practice away from being able to juggle. Darn it, a half an hour too late for the Juggling Festival this past weekend. :( So, the real story of Helen and Troy: Helen was summoned away to Egypt (taken away from Paris because Paris broke the guest friendship clause). When Menelaus and the Achaians seized Troy, they did not find Helen. Instead, they were redirected to Egypt. The Achaian army proceeded on to Egypt, where they found Helen and all the stolen treasures; they took her home. That's it. Thanks Herodotus!

Went to Oaks Park yesterday -- something like a carnival, but they call it an "amusement park" here. The haunted mansion was especially scary. Hahaha. :)
