I saw snow!!! Yay! Niagara Falls was awesome. We took a day tour to see it from all different angles, from the US side and the Canadian side, and even from the tower down the street. It's quiz time! How many fall(s) make up Niagara Falls? I have lots of trivia now about the Falls; I'll spare you the long Journal entry. I have so much work to do!!! Aaaa!!!

In 12 hours, I'll be on my way to New York, baby!

As for the light switch problem, here it is:
You and a friend are in jail. The warden puts forth a challenge that will end in either freedom or the death penalty. You and your friend may discuss a strategy beforehand, but once it begins, there is no discussion between you two.

The challenge is as such: the warden will take one of you at a time into a room that has two light switches. The original state is unknown (either both up, one up one down [2 ways], or both down). When you are taken into the room, you MUST switch one of the switches. You cannot refuse to switch, you cannot switch more than one, and your switch only goes one way. (Example: I go in, and both are down; I switch the right side one up.) In order to be set free, one of you must tell the warden when both of you have been in the room (and be correct, of course). If you are incorrect, then you both die.

Side note: the warden knows your plan, so it must be foolproof (i.e., the warden can't bring you in in some order that will foil your plan). Also, the warden cannot mess with the switches. The timespan of this game is arbitrary; the warden can take person A in the room today, and he can take person B next year/next day/next hour/etc..

What strategy are you and your friend going to use? (This is the easy one).
Then, look at the situation with three people. What strategy are you going to use?
And for bigger numbers? 23: what is the strategy?

I'd be happy to check the solutions you find.

I figured out the light switch problem! I was sitting in the math lounge, and there were two light switches on the wall... so I decided to try to solve the problem Joe Buhler (my faculty advisor [and graduate from Harvard University with his doctorate]) gave me a while back. According to him, only a couple people who have gone through Reed/ teach at Reed have ever solved it (even he asked for the solution when he tried to solve it). Go me!

Orchestra concert tonight. Guys are so cute in tuxes and suits and the like... black shirts... oooo.... My piccolo solo (3rd mvt. of Bartok's Rumanian Dances) went well. Yay me! I think that's the best I've ever played it. As for the second mvt of the Handel... dude... something went wrong. I played with his hands, but I don't think everyone else was... hmm... even the oboe player (our conductor's wife) was lost at one point. At least we all stayed together and finished the piece. I feel pretty confident that I was right with him... it just didn't sound right all together. Oh well. We get another stab at it in two weeks at the December concert with the choir.

Margaret Cho performed last night. It was crude humor... mostly about sex, racism, and homosexuals. I didn't enjoy it very much. Someone submitted a question about breaking up with a significant other... Margaret Cho did make a good point about that... if you're even asking that question, it's time. Some other guy did the opening act. He was darn funny. Anyway, I still don't think it was worth 18 grand.
