Today, I went with David and Nicki to get some fruit at a fruit stand. Thirteen pounds for five dollars!!! Talk about a good deal! Afterward, Nicki had to take care of some things, so we dropped her off at her apartment. David and I then went to OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). Wow, OMSI is giant compared to DSC! We raced boats (sail and propeller), we built paper bridges, we built a cantenary arch, we did some experiments in the lab, I drew an animation bit, we solved a bunch of puzzle things, we read about all sorts of things (there was even a section on the Hanford Station Nuclear Reactor!), and I even got to do a mock weather report. We had brunch before going to OMSI -- I tried the eggs benedict... great stuff! For dinner (from which we just got back), we went to India Oven, a small themed restaurant on Hawthorne. All-in-all, a fun day!

I'm back at Reed for Reactor Paideia! Here's what I did this whole week: Well, read the post just before this one, then I also: moved fuel, inspected control rods, did many startups/shutdowns/weeklys, passed my Radioactive Materials Handling exam, passed my Rabbit certification, passed my NAA (Neutron Activation Analysis) exam, and did lots of other studying/checkoffs/etc. I had lots of fun this week! We ate at various restaurants around Portland, and we watched lots of movies. I learned how to play a couple new card games, and I got some sleep to make up for the sleep I'll lose in the coming few months. Next week, we're going to Hanford to the Columbia Generating Station on Tuesday, then doing Emergency Drills on Wednesday and Thursday. All next week is Paideia, so I'll be having major fun learning lots of useless stuff!!!

I'm back at Reed for Reactor Paideia! Today, I calibrated some EPDs (electronic personal dosimeters), calibrated the bulk water monitor, and watched three exciting films on Reactor Safety. I also read a manual on radioactive material transport. The others installed the new CAM, APM, and GSM (continuous air monitor, air particulate monitor, and gaseous stack monitor, respectively) and installed the new water level monitor. Tonight, we're going to watch a bunch of old movies from 1968, when the reactor was first installed. Having fun here, but wishing break was just a little longer!
