I saw the Euclid String Quartet perform last night. It was wonderful. They played pieces by Haydn, Bartok, and our very own Armando Bayolo. Armando's 3rd and 4th movements were really funny (there's really no other way to put it!). One day, you'll hear August Dramas, and you'll know what I mean.

Fawntia, Candy, and I went to the First Friday stargazing on top of the Physics building. There are so many stars in the sky here. Michael Faison, professor of physics (and now my conference leader), led the escapade up to the telescope.

This is our director: Armando Bayolo. Wow. He went to Eastman. He has also composed lots of orchestra and choral works. Go Armando!

I was productive today. I'm proud of myself. I got signatures for my ADD/DROP slip, I turned in my overload petition, I turned in my Biology Outreach application, I quit skiing (I already explained this, right?), and I sat in a Masterclass session at Prexy (with the Euclid String Quartet and the Lysistrata Quartet). All I have left is homework and Hum reading!

Eliah told me he'd call back last night. He didn't. He's sooo out. (Wait, I already decided that before, right?). I stopped by ballroom dancing yesterday. He's taking that class, apparently.

Black is a strong color. It makes one feel elite. Black turtlenecks, especially. Josh wears black turtlenecks all the time. There's an online auction of various Josh Groban signed memorabilia; this is happening from this coming Saturday until the 27th, I believe. His gold record is up for auction. Proceeds will benefit the David Foster Foundation.

Why, oh why, is there so much Humanities reading?!

I spent about 5 hours at the Reactor today -- maybe more. They were right... it's addictive! On the plus side, I did get to do a weekly checklist, the lab, AND a shutdown. Go me!

Today's Hum lecture was about the Ara Pacis in Rome. One of the points William Diebold made during the lecture ws that context is important to understanding art. For instance, "Go jump in a lake." Now, if Kunal said it and it was right after I made some ridiculous suggestion, then one could accurately pinpoint his intention behind such a statement. Conversely, if I were standing by a park lake (filled with kids trying to escape the summer heat), and the lifeguard made the same comment, I would take it seriously and jump in the lake (probably to save someone -- although, I don't know why the lifeguard wouldn't do that... hmm. One could also accurately pinpoint the lifeguard's intention. In any case, the context helps the observer understand what the speaker really means. ABOVE all of this is the true understanding of a language -- one would never say, "Go jump in a lake" if he really meant, "Go jump in THE lake" or, "Go jump in THIS lake." Same for someone who is joking around... one would never retort, Go jump in THE lake." It's all an understanding of how the language is used. Now that we've got that straight, how does that help us understand the Ara Pacis?!

Congratulations, you're a black belt Grobanite!
Josh should be very proud to have a Grobanite like you!

What degree of Grobanite are you?

I like choir. I don't think I can sight-sing quite as well as Nick or Ross or various other veteran singers... but it's really, really fun nonetheless. Physics lab today was not bad at all -- it was about standing waves on a string... and it only took us two hours to finish! I don't think I need to write again that math was awesome... it always is. I met with the Asian Student Alliance tonight -- all 7 of us. There are actually 40 or so Asians on the "list." I think 6% or so of Reed is Asian. We're going to do a rice night one day soon. Also, we're going to start discussions so that we won't forget that we're Asian. It's weird, but sometimes one does forget when one is in a community so densely populated with white people. I'll look up one day, and I'll realize that I'm the only Asian person in the room. In fact, that happened again tonight at choir. I think I'm the only Asian person in the choir. Anyway, another weird thing is that I keep on getting this feeling of deja vu... like the other day, sitting in Vollum Lounge, hearing about the plans to cut down lots of forest on Mt. Hood. Today, I experienced another bit of deja vu when someone mentioned something about "yellow fever"... a rather disturbing joke... I won't mention it here. Lastly, another incident when Jay was around the other day. Aaaa!!! Am I going crazy, or is it really true?! Okay, must do Hum reading.

Storytime! In elementary school, one of my teachers asked us each to draw something that started with the letter "H." When I was done, I showed the teacher, and she said, "Beverly, that doesn't start with an 'H'; that's a fish." I replied, "No, it's not. It's the Hawaii state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa." End storytime.

Mondays are by far the busiest of my days. I have work from 8-9am, then I have class from 9am till 11am, lunch at 11am. Then, class from 12noon to 4pm (straight through). Then, break for dinner. Orchestra 6-7:30pm, and Reactor from 7:30-9pm. I'm tired.

In case you didn't see it at Kunal's site: If Abraham Lincoln had done his Gettysburg Address on Powerpoint. It's hilarious!
