I don't like him any more, but it still upsets me that he can't even say "hi" any more. Perhaps what bothers me most is his choice of friends. I have maybe two people I absolutely cannot stand at Reed, and he happened to become friends with both of them -- and only because they're friends with someone he became friends with. God, I can't stand their group of people. Anyway, I'm trying hard not to care, but he seems like such a worthwhile person to worry about -- he's smart, funny, and talented up the wazoo. I'm especially worried that these new friends got him to do the whole alcohol and drugs thing -- I can't get myself to accept that.
I'm sort of in an overall depressed state. The weirdest thing was that after my reactor exam, none of this mattered -- it was a happiness that was not centered around some guy or some really happy moment in the past. I need to find more of these happy times, or life seems hardly worth living.

I like having a journal that Reedies don't read. I'd like a journal for just those from back home to read. Maybe I'll continue using this one. I thought Fourthought would be the place to post things I didn't want Reedies to see... but they'll find a way to find it.
I like writing in my paper journal, too. I'm sad that I don't have a lot of time to. I am feeling really depressed right now... so depressed I feel slothful and lethargic. I didn't do much work last night because I just wanted to lie on the couch and mope. And that's what I did. I don't feel like doing much at all right now... not even going to class. I probably will end up going because that was what I was programmed to do. I didn't even do the reading yet for this class. I don't know how to better things, and it is just making me feel more and more helpless. I want to talk to someone, but I don't know what to say and I don't want to be intrusive. I guess I'll have to stick to the paper journal and the punching bag.

So, the commenting is down, eh? Well, I'll show you, Blogger! Here's my new journal: Beverly's Reediejournal. Yeah, it's on Movable Type. I know I told Gary that I wouldn't post the link... but really, it's so convenient! It has built in commenting, and it's pretty elegant. I need to make the title show up -- all of my efforts to update the stylesheet have been unsuccessful. Grrr. Gary, fix my reediejournal!
Gee, I hope I can somehow keep all of these entries. It'd be a shame to let three or so years' worth of entries disappear. I hope my paper journal has captured that which was on this journal -- it certainly was updated less frequently.
Anyway, farewell dear old Blog...

I had the most amazing weekend. I went to Seattle to see Josh there on Saturday, and then I drove down with Kathi and Allison (two of my Grobanite friends from Washington) to Portland. Oh yeah, there was another concert in Portland tonight (Sunday). We had so much fun! Josh was SPECTACULAR. And, at one point, we all got out our light pens and waved them back and forth... the whole auditorium was filled with these. Josh was definitely touched: his smile showed it from ear to ear. And, he even got choked up at the end of the song tonight. Afterward, Allison got to go backstage to meet Josh (she won the contest). She took my David Sedaris book back there with her to give to Josh for me. I had had David sign it to Josh when he was at Reed. She said that he LOVED the book. I'm so happy. I can't get to sleep now. I am on such a Josh high! P.S. I had 3rd row center seats at both concerts! AAA!

Mary Catherine King asked if I'd help with the search for the Associate Dean of Student Services. I thought she meant that I could read through the cover letters and resumes _last week_ when I actually had time. Instead, I received them yesterday and I am frantically trying to get them done before I head off to Seattle. Perhaps she won't mind if I read them when school starts -- only, I know I'd mind if I had to do that. I guess I could read them on the train ride up. I know what kind of person I'm looking for, but I doubt that perfect person exists. I read through two last night before I went to bed, and it seems as if you need to combine their experiences to make them fully capable of fulfilling this position.
I had this weird dream last night about Sean Astin. Weird.

Our star lantern making class today went very well. we had probably 20 or so people show up, and we made tons of star lanterns -- we even found ways to improve the procedure.
The E-drill this morning for reactor was rather fun. They put lantern mantles (sp?) into people's clothing to make them "contaminated"... basically, the geiger counter would actually pick up a count rate higher than 100 above background. Crazy. And they had a mole... Jacob was really on their side. Grrr. Anyway, it was fun. Rachel became "unconscious" and I had to be emergency coordinator. I hope I have to chance to do that again... I'll do it better next time.

I spent all weekend shopping for my Paideia classes. If there's something I learned from all of this planning and leadership, it's that everything is flexible. When someone gives you a budget, there's room for a little bending -- nip and tuck here, add some there, etc. It's probably similar with time deadlines, too. I turned in my RAW app a day late, and yet I still was funded for my art project. I have always tried to be prompt and prepared, and it's uncanny how many people out there are not the same way.
I was reading my paper journal last night. The first entry of my Reed Journal talks about how many substance-free people I had met in my dorm. The ironic part about it is that I think all of those people I listed are no longer sub-free. It's a good thing I'm living in the sub-free dorm this year, or I may have lost my marbles. Really, there was nothing to do on Friday nights because everyone was out partying/drinking. I spent most of my Friday nights and weekends studying or doing work. Here, we stay up late playing Taboo and we talk about things in the hallway. I like the atmosphere. Yes, that may mean less studying... but life isn't all about studying. Life was meant to be lived for the moment. How many times can you say that you stayed up all night playing Scrabble, Taboo, and Cranium? How many times can you say that you went to a free Duncan Sheik concert? Or drove up to Seattle with complete strangers to hear Josh Groban on the phone? Or did so many of the wonderful things I've experienced here at Reed and around Portland? I'll miss it when I have to leave.
